Data/Hi-Speed Networks Digital Plumbing When most people think about the current applications and need for networking capabilities, it is with regard to conveniently and quickly access the internet. We find it hard not to agree. Few things are as broad and vast as that reached by this culture altering portal. If the internet is not already ubiquitous, it surely will be, and much sooner rather than later. In the broadcasting business, the word web is still sometimes used as a colloquial substitute for the term network. In creating a domestic LAN (Local Area Network), the concept of building a web could not be a more accurate or literal analogy. For as much as we talk about the internet, the performance capabilities of a home's communications and data network is much more a function of its own intranet. In its most simplistic form, accomplishing this element well is primarily a function of creating capacity, and distribution. Think of it as Digital Plumbing. Nothing sexy about this, or something you'll want to show the neighbors. It's about laying the "Giant Wire Highway," under your floors, through your walls, and in your attic. As more and more of the world becomes "digitized," it is increasingly important to make sure that there is a pathway for it. It's almost as simple as that. Computers communicate via these pathways, and "computers" are not limited to what we often generically refer to as P.C.'s, (to us, McIntosh is and will always be a revered manufacturer of spectacular audio source components). Computers are what make the magic happen, even when it's the computer inside an otherwise traditional looking black box component. (TiVo, satellite receivers, digital cable boxes, etc.) The term "Future Proofing" is precariously close to being a contradiction of terms, but if there is one thing you can do to plan for the future, it would be to create as big a WEB as you possibly can. |
