Home Theater The Feature Presentation While we think of whole house audio as being an enriching and genuinely beautiful system that you can integrate into a home, a different word comes to mind when we think of home theater. FUN! Watching movies is fun, plain and simple. It's one of the most proven forms of pure escapism. As for defining what constitutes "home theater," the spectrum of opinion can vary greatly. While there are those who would argue that only an absolutely dedicated "screening room" satisfies the definition for home theater, we're willing to take a slightly more expansive view. A well designed, dedicated viewing area can be located almost anywhere in a house, and within a fairly broad range, all systems will share most of the same common elements, to one degree or another. You have to start with a video source. It's funny that we don't use the word television nearly as much as we once did. Now it's a screen, or a monitor, or a panel. At this moment, the market is on its way towards flooding in this arena. We haven't reached high tide yet, and there will be new, unknown names who will bring good new products into the market, and there will be those who attempt to do so and fail. Today, every plasma looks sexy, but you shouldn't judge a book merely by its cover. We consider it a big part of our responsibility to help you find the right video source. We love the black boxes, and today's surround receivers just keep getting better. There are many good choices, and in addition to creating so many great effects for supporting what ever might be on the screen, more-and-more units have built-in zone control features, which makes them tremendously flexible, in terms of multiple-use capabilities, along with realistic and rich audio reproduction. Do you remember us saying "speakers, speakers, speakers" on the previous page? This holds true for supporting a good home theater or surround system as well. If a receiver deciphers sound into five channels, then one should have the necessary five speakers (and a sub-woofer) to support that system, to maximize its capabilities. Again, we also want to re-emphasize that we look to build out this system in a way that eliminates redundancies, and fortunately, in many designs, the speakers which support the home theater can often do double duty as a part of the whole house audio system. And yes, our feelings about aesthetics hold true for home theater, just as they do for every other system. It should perform beautifully, match the style that surrounds it, and be as invisible as possible, if it needs to be. ![]() |
