Automation/Control Systems Can't We All Just Get Along ? This is where it all happens, plain and simple. The control systems being used today are where the "smart" in "Smart Homes" is derived. In a classic last but not least sort of way, these control systems are essentially the element that makes everything work as a system. The skill to properly design, install and program a complex control system is also an important characteristic which distinguishes a first class systems integrator. As for describing what control systems do, or are capable of doing (in case "controlling the system" isn't self-explanatory), the only real limitations on a system (budget notwithstanding) are a function of choosing a manufacturer with a good reputation for their integration products (We use the fabulous products from ELAN Home Systems for all of our control and integration applications. Exclusively!), a skilled programmer (we supply that), and a healthy dose of imaginative planning. A relatively simple example of how one might use an advanced control system could begin with the capability to control whole house audio and video distribution. For example, our design philosophy for whole house audio/video distribution systems encourages the homeowner to integrate multiple playback sources into the system (Hi Fidelity multiple-output Music Server, XM Radio, satellite TV, TiVo, a dvd player/server of some sort, etc). Simply said, a standard application of a well designed control system would give you the ability to access any and all of these central sources from anywhere in the house, individually, simultaneously, overlapping, etc. Pretty cool, isn't it? As for more complex applications...there are virtually no boundaries. Many of these systems are often also used to control lighting, security, HVAC and other electronic functions. If we have a large video display in a room with a lot of ambient lighting, we can build a system that integrates the control functions of video, lighting and shade control, such that when the customer presses a button on their touchscreen to turn on the television, it will automatically dim the lights to pre-determined levels, and lower the shades in the room to eliminate glare from outside. This is extremely important during football season, when the sun is lower in the sky and viewing is taking place in the middle of the afternoon! |
